Intra-articular (Joint) Injections

Targeting pain at the source

What are intra-articular injections?

Intra-articular injections are treatments delivered directly into a joint space to reduce pain, inflammation, and improve joint function.

What we use and why:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP):

    • Platelet-rich plasma is a product created from your own dog’s blood
that is rich in cells called platelets rich in growth factors and inflammatory mediators. PRP can
be processed on site and delivered all at one time with mild sedation. PRP essentially reduces
inflammation and associated discomfort. Scientific research has shown that these products are
more likely to have a “trophic effect” in that they provide a beneficial effect for inflammation,
pain and healing dogs, studies support their use for osteoarthritis with clinical benefits lasting 3-6
      months.

  • ArthramidVet injections:

    • ArthramidVet, is a uniquely cross-linked 2.5% polyacrylamide
hydrogel, which adheres to the synovial (joint fluid) lining through its ability to exchange water
molecules. Over a period of 14 days, the gel becomes integrated into the synovial lining and its
immediate surrounding tissue of the inner capsule by a combination of cell migration and vessel
ingrowth forming a thick, cushion-like membrane consisting of vessel integrated gel covered by
a new and hypercellular synovial cell lining. Unlike other hydrogels, ArthamidVet fully
integrates into the surrounding tissue and therefore has long-lasting effects. These effects can last
      up to 9-12 months.

What a PRP treatment looks like:

This procedure is performed using aseptic technique and requires light sedation. Your pet will be sedated, and a blood sample will be collected to prepare platelet-rich plasma. The injection site will be clipped and surgically prepared prior to the rehabilitation veterinarian administering the PRP into the affected joint. The procedure typically requires approximately 15–30 minutes to complete. Following the injection, your pet will be reversed from sedation, monitored during recovery, and discharged the same day.
